Product description

RESILIO's smart blue-green roofs are an innovative urban solution combining vegetation with advanced water management systems to address climate-related challenges in cities. These roofs consist of a layered structure where a water storage system beneath the vegetation layer captures and retains rainwater. The integrated Decision Support System (DSS) uses weather forecasts to manage the smart valves, optimizing water retention during dry periods and releasing excess water ahead of heavy rainfall to prevent urban flooding. This dynamic system not only mitigates flood risks but also reduces the urban heat island effect by cooling the environment through evapotranspiration. Additionally, the green roofs enhance urban biodiversity by providing habitats for various species. Implemented across 12,683 m² of rooftops in Amsterdam, the RESILIO project demonstrates a scalable and effective approach to making cities more resilient to climate change.

About the Company

RESILIO (Resilience nEtwork of Smart Innovative cLImate-adaptive rOoftops) is a collaborative initiative aimed at enhancing urban climate resilience in Amsterdam. Between 2018 and 2022, the project transformed 10,000 m² of unused rooftops into smart blue-green roofs across four neighborhoods: Kattenburg, Oosterparkbuurt, Indische Buurt, and Slotermeer. These roofs integrate vegetation with water storage systems, managed by a smart Decision Support System (DSS) that responds to weather forecasts to optimize water retention and release. By mitigating urban flooding, reducing heat stress, and promoting biodiversity, RESILIO contributes to a sustainable and livable city environment. The project exemplifies innovative urban adaptation strategies in response to climate change.
