Product description

The Purifaaya ceramic household water filter is a gravity-fed filtration system designed for everyday use in East African homes. It removes bacteria, pathogens, and sediment using locally sourced clay and ceramic materials—without chemicals or electricity. The filter operates by allowing water to pass through a porous ceramic clay matrix, leaving contaminants behind, and producing clear, safe drinking water. It requires minimal maintenance and can last up to five years.

A larger institutional version, the Purifaaya XL, serves schools, clinics, and offices with elevated capacity. The Viva Purifaaya targets urban households and small offices. All models eliminate the need for boiling water using firewood or charcoal, reducing indoor air pollution and deforestation. The design is rugged, simple to use, and affordable—priced to meet the needs of lower-income households. By producing and distributing the filter locally, SPOUTS supports community employment, promotes behavior change, and fosters long-term water access solutions rooted in sustainability.

About the Company

SPOUTS International is a Ugandan social enterprise manufacturing and distributing locally made ceramic water filters under the brand name Purifaaya. Established in 2011 by Ugandan innovators, the company combines a commercial sales model with verified carbon credit projects to expand access to clean drinking water, particularly across Uganda, Rwanda, and East Africa. By eliminating boiling with wood or charcoal, SPOUTS improves household health, reduces deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions, and supports sustainable livelihoods. It operates both commercially and through NGO partnerships, empowering low-income families, schools, and health centres with affordable water filtration technology. SPOUTS has reached hundreds of thousands of individuals and reduced CO₂ emissions by over one million tons through its filter distribution programs and carbon credit initiatives. The organization is rooted in local production, community engagement, and environmentally friendly operations, contributing to healthier communities and reduced environmental impact across its operating regions.
