Product description

ORCA is a revolutionary Earth observation sensor platform developed by SkyfloX specifically for installation on commercial aircraft. This innovative system collects rich optical and thermal imagery, as well as digital surface models, during multiple revisits per day over flight routes. Unlike traditional satellite-based monitoring systems, ORCA offers high-frequency, meter-level environmental monitoring without the need for satellite launches.

Each compact ORCA unit, roughly the size of a small suitcase, is mounted under the fuselage of the aircraft and powered by the aircraft itself. This plug-and-play system is EASA-approved and seamlessly integrates with minimal maintenance required. Airlines benefit from a range of advantages, including new ancillary revenue streams, improved sustainability credentials, and no capital outlay as SkyfloX covers equipment, delivery, and installation costs.

The system's applications are diverse and impactful, supporting global environmental initiatives such as wildfire detection, agricultural analytics, coastal pollution tracking, and maritime monitoring. Data collected by ORCA is processed through a proprietary ground segment and analytics pipeline to generate valuable data products for government agencies, precision agriculture firms, environmental consultancies, and climate researchers.

ORCA's standout feature is its scalable Earth observation capabilities, which contribute to reducing space debris by replacing satellite launches with airborne sensing. This innovative approach not only enables real-time planetary data acquisition but also promotes profitable and eco-efficient innovation within the aviation industry.

With its positioning for global deployment across major air carriers, ORCA is aligned with climate monitoring objectives and operational efficiency, making it a cutting-edge solution for sustainable environmental monitoring in the aviation sector.

About the Company

SkyfloX is a Luxembourg‐based space-tech spin-off from the European Space Agency, founded in 2016. Its flagship ORCA (Optical and RF Constellations on Aircraft) concept retrofits commercial airliners with compact Earth‑observation sensors that operate during regular flight routes. These sensors produce high‑frequency, meter‑resolution imagery—including optical, thermal, and DSM data—for applications such as forest fire detection, water management, pollution mapping, and precision agriculture. SkyfloX’s turnkey, EASA‑certified system installs under each aircraft with minimal airframe modification and no fleet owner investment. Airlines receive ancillary revenue, while contributing to reducing carbon emissions by eliminating need for dedicated satellite launches. Its solution makes Earth observation more affordable, frequent, and environmentally sustainable. SkyfloX collaborates with major airlines, ESA Business Incubation Centres and aerospace engineering partners to deploy a constellation of up to 40 aircraft by 2024. The company’s mission aligns with environmental monitoring, sustainable innovation, and scalable, cost-effective data acquisition in support of both public and private clients.
